How to Optimise Your Google Business Profile for Local SEO

Google Business Profile local SEO Malaysia optimisation
An optimised Google Business Profile appears prominently when local customers search for your services in Malaysia.

An unoptimised Google Business Profile is a missed opportunity. Even a verified profile with minimal content underperforms versus a fully optimised competitor. Optimising your GBP takes 2 to 3 hours of initial work and then 15 minutes per week to maintain. For Malaysian businesses that serve local customers, this effort directly translates to more calls, direction requests and website visits.

Step 1: Complete Every Profile Field

1

Profile Completeness Check

In your GBP dashboard (business.google.com), go to Edit profile and verify all fields are complete:

Field Required? SEO Impact
Business Name Yes High – do not add keywords here
Primary Category Yes Very High – most important ranking factor
Additional Categories Recommended High – add up to 9 secondary categories
Address / Service Area Yes High
Phone Number Yes Medium
Website URL Recommended Medium
Business Hours Yes Medium – update for public holidays
Business Description Recommended Medium – include keywords naturally
Services List Recommended High – adds keyword-rich content

Step 2: Write a Strong Business Description

2

Craft a Keyword-Rich Description (750 chars)

The GBP description appears below your profile and in the About tab. Write clearly about:

  • What you do (your primary service)
  • Who you serve (types of customers)
  • Where you operate (locations)
  • Why you are different (unique value)

Include your main service keywords naturally in the first 250 characters since GBP shows a truncated preview. Example for an IT company:

Cybergate MSP Technology provides managed IT support and cybersecurity services for Malaysian businesses. We manage your IT infrastructure, Microsoft 365, network security and website SEO so you can focus on running your business. Based in Melaka with coverage across KL and Selangor. Step 3: Add Photos Strategically

3

Upload a Minimum of 10 Photos

GBP profiles with photos receive significantly more engagement than those without. Upload:

  • Logo: Square format, at least 250x250px, clear on white background
  • Cover photo: 1080x608px, shows your premises or a professional team photo
  • Interior photos: 3 to 5 photos showing your office, reception or working environment
  • Team photos: 2 to 3 professional photos of key team members
  • Work/service photos: Photos showing your work in action (installing equipment, conducting meetings, on-site visits)

Name your photo files with descriptive keywords before uploading (e.g. cybergate-it-support-melaka-team.jpg) as this can carry minor SEO benefit. Use real photos, not stock images – authenticity builds trust.

Step 4: Build and Manage Reviews

4

Get Your Google Review Link

In your GBP dashboard, click Ask for reviews. Copy the short review link. Share this link via:

  • WhatsApp message to satisfied clients after completing work
  • Email footer with a polite request
  • QR code printed on receipts, business cards or welcome kits
5

Respond to Every Review

Responding to reviews (positive and negative) signals to Google that you are actively managing your business. It also builds trust with potential customers reading your profile.

  • Positive reviews: Thank the reviewer by name, mention a specific aspect of the work, invite them back. Keep it genuine and not generic.
  • Negative reviews: Respond calmly and professionally. Acknowledge the issue, apologise for the experience, offer to resolve it offline (provide a contact number). Never argue or be defensive.

Step 5: Publish Weekly Google Posts

6

Post Regular Updates

In your GBP dashboard, go to Add update (or Posts). Create a new post weekly:

  • Share a link to your latest blog article with a photo and 1 to 2 sentence teaser
  • Announce a new service or product
  • Share a client success story (with permission)
  • Post a relevant IT tip or security alert
  • Announce business hours changes for public holidays

Posts appear on your GBP for 7 days and are seen by customers viewing your profile in Google Search and Maps. Consistent posting keeps your profile active and improves visibility.

Enable Messaging

In your GBP settings, enable the Message feature. This allows customers to send you a direct message from your Google profile. Respond within 24 hours to maintain a good response rate. Unanswered messages can negatively affect your profile visibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no minimum number of reviews required to appear in the local pack (the 3-business map result). However, more positive reviews with high ratings directly correlate with better local pack rankings. For competitive Malaysian business categories (clinics, law firms), aim for at least 10 to 20 reviews before you can rank competitively. Response rate and recency also matter – recent reviews (last 90 days) carry more weight than old ones.

You can ask customers directly for reviews as long as you do not offer incentives (discounts, gifts, free services) in exchange. Acceptable methods: send a follow-up WhatsApp after service completion with your GBP review link, add a QR code linking to your review page on receipts, business cards or flyers, include a review request in your email signature. Never create fake reviews or buy reviews – Google detects and removes them, and repeated violations can result in profile suspension.

Google Business Posts are short updates (up to 1,500 characters with a photo) that appear directly on your Google Business Profile in search results. They can be: What’s New posts (general updates), Event posts, Offer posts (promotions with start/end dates), and Product posts. Regular posting signals to Google that your business is active and engaged, which can improve local rankings. Posts expire after 7 days so weekly posting is recommended.

Sign into your GBP dashboard at business.google.com. Go to Edit profile and update the incorrect information. Some changes (address, business name) require re-verification. Hours, phone and description update immediately. If Google keeps reverting your changes, it may be pulling data from third-party sources (Yelp, Yellow Pages, Foursquare). Update your business details on those platforms too. Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across all online listings is important for local SEO.
