Your meta title and description are your advertisement in Google search results – they determine whether people click.

Your meta title and meta description are the two lines of text Google shows in search results for your page. They do not just affect rankings – they determine whether someone clicks on your listing or goes to a competitor. A poorly written title loses clicks even when the page ranks well. This guide covers how to write both for maximum visibility and click rate.

Understanding What You Are Writing

Element Where It Shows Character Limit SEO Impact
Meta Title Blue link text in Google results, browser tab 50 to 60 characters Direct ranking factor
Meta Description Grey text under the title in Google results 140 to 160 characters Affects click rate, not directly rankings

Step 1: Write the Meta Title

1

Meta Title Formula

A high-performing meta title follows this structure:

Primary Keyword | Supporting Info | Brand Name

Rules:

  • Put the most important keyword as early as possible – ideally first word or first few words
  • Keep total length under 60 characters
  • Use your exact target keyword – not a variation or synonym
  • Include your location for local businesses (e.g. Melaka, Malaysia, KL)
  • Use a power word where possible (Trusted, Certified, Fast, Affordable, Expert)

Step 2: Write the Meta Description

3

Meta Description Formula

The meta description is your 160-character advertisement. Every word counts:

[State what you do] + [Key benefit] + [Location] + [Call to action]

Rules:

  • Include your focus keyword naturally (Google bolds keywords that match the search query)
  • State a clear benefit or value proposition (save time, reduce cost, increase ranking)
  • Include a call to action (Get a free audit, Call us today, Request a quote)
  • Keep under 160 characters
  • Write for the human reader, not for Google

Step 3: Enter in Rank Math

Set Titles and Descriptions in WordPress

Open the page or post in the WordPress editor. Scroll down to the Rank Math SEO section (or find it in the right sidebar under SEO). Click the Edit Snippet button.

  • SEO Title: Type your meta title. The character counter shows remaining space. Green = good length.
  • Permalink: This becomes the URL. Keep it short with the main keyword (e.g. /it-support-malaysia/)
  • Meta Description: Type your description. The preview below updates in real time to show how your search result will appear.

Click Save or Update to publish. Google typically picks up changes within 1 to 7 days.

Google May Override Your Description

Google rewrites meta descriptions when it thinks its own snippet better matches the searcher’s query. This happens approximately 70% of the time. However, a well-written description with clear keyword match is more likely to be shown as-is and should still be written carefully for the 30% of times it does display.

Frequently Asked Questions

If no meta title is set, Google uses your page title (the H1 heading) as the search result title – which may not be optimised. If no meta description is set, Google auto-generates a snippet from the page content, which may not be relevant or compelling. While Google sometimes overrides your meta description with its own snippet anyway, writing a clear, optimised description increases the chances of your preferred text being shown and improves click rates.

The meta description is not a direct ranking factor – Google has confirmed this. However, it indirectly affects rankings through click-through rate (CTR). A compelling meta description that clearly matches the searcher’s intent drives more clicks. Higher CTR signals to Google that your result is relevant, which can positively influence rankings over time. Write meta descriptions for humans, not robots.

Google typically displays up to 50 to 60 characters of a title before truncating it with “…”. Google measures title length in pixels, not characters, so the exact limit varies by font. As a practical rule, keep titles under 60 characters. Titles that are too long get cut off in search results, which reduces clarity and click rates.

For the homepage and about page, yes. For service and blog pages, it depends on available character space. A good format: Primary Keyword – Secondary Info | Brand Name. If the keyword and description use all 60 characters, you can omit the brand name from body pages. The homepage should always include your brand name prominently.
