Most Malaysian SMEs do not think about backup and disaster recovery until data loss has already occurred. Ransomware, hardware failure, accidental deletion and physical disasters can wipe years of business data in minutes. Without a tested backup and recovery plan, the average Malaysian SME takes 3 to 5 days to recover - if recovery is possible at all.

Cybergate designs layered backup solutions for businesses across KL, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka following the 3-2-1 backup rule: 3 copies of data, 2 different media types and 1 copy offsite or in the cloud. We implement, monitor and test recovery procedures so you know your backup actually works before you need it.

Unlike simply installing backup software and walking away, our managed backup service includes scheduled restore testing, daily monitoring with failure alerts and quarterly recovery drills. We verify your backup is working and your team knows how to recover from it.

What Our Backup and Disaster Recovery Solutions Cover

We design layered backup solutions following the 3-2-1 rule and test recovery procedures so your business can restore in hours, not days.

  • NAS backup: Synology and QNAP with RAID and versioning
  • Cloud backup: AWS, Azure and Wasabi offsite replication
  • Offsite encrypted backup replication for air-gap protection
  • File server and shared drive backup with version history
  • Microsoft 365 mailbox and SharePoint backup
  • Server image backup for full bare-metal recovery
  • Virtualisation backup: Hyper-V and VMware
  • Automated backup schedules with daily, weekly and monthly retention
  • Backup monitoring with failure alerts via email and WhatsApp
  • Scheduled restore testing: quarterly verification of recovery
  • Disaster recovery plan documentation and staff training
  • PDPA-compliant data retention policies and secure deletion

The 3-2-1 Backup Rule - What It Means for Your Business

The 3-2-1 backup rule is the gold standard for data protection. Keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of media, with 1 copy stored offsite or in the cloud. This means if ransomware encrypts your primary systems, if your office burns down or if your NAS fails, you always have a clean recoverable copy. Cybergate implements and monitors all three layers for every client.

Our Backup Implementation Process

01

Data Assessment

We assess what data your business has, where it lives, how critical it is and what your recovery time objective is. We identify gaps in your current backup coverage.

02

Solution Design

We design a layered backup solution based on your data volume, budget and recovery time requirements. You receive a clear proposal before any work begins.

03

Implementation

We install and configure all backup hardware and software, set schedules and monitoring alerts and run the first full backup to verify everything is working.

04

Monitoring and Testing

We monitor your backup daily, alert you to any failures, run quarterly restore tests and provide monthly backup health reports so you always know your data is protected.

Pricing Guide

Backup solutions are priced based on your data volume and required recovery time. As a guide: NAS backup from RM 1,500 (Synology 2-bay with drives), cloud backup from RM 80 per month (up to 1TB, Wasabi), managed backup monitoring from RM 200 per month including daily monitoring, monthly reports and quarterly restore tests. Kuala Lumpur Petaling Jaya Shah Alam Subang Jaya Klang Cheras Puchong Cyberjaya Putrajaya Seremban Nilai Melaka Alor Gajah Muar

Real Client Results

A legal firm in Petaling Jaya relied on a single external HDD with no monitoring or testing. Staff accidentally deleted 3 years of case files and recovery was impossible. After Cybergate implemented a Synology NAS with versioned backups, Microsoft 365 mailbox backup and cloud replication to Wasabi, they have had zero unrecoverable data loss incidents since.

A retail company in Melaka with 3 outlets was hit by ransomware that encrypted their POS server and accounting data. Because Cybergate had implemented offsite backup 6 months earlier, we restored their entire system to a clean state within 4 hours using the previous night's backup. Without that backup, estimated recovery cost would have exceeded RM 50,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between backup and disaster recovery?
Backup is the process of creating copies of your data. Disaster recovery is the plan and process for restoring your business operations after a major failure. Good disaster recovery requires not just a backup but a tested recovery procedure with a documented recovery time objective.
How often should backups run?
For most Malaysian SMEs we recommend daily backups of critical data. File servers and databases should back up at least daily. Microsoft 365 mailboxes should be backed up daily.
Can you back up Microsoft 365 mailboxes and SharePoint?
Yes. Microsoft does not provide comprehensive backup of 365 mailboxes, SharePoint or Teams data. We implement dedicated Microsoft 365 backup solutions that provide point-in-time recovery of emails, files, SharePoint sites and Teams conversations.
How do we know the backup is actually working?
We run scheduled restore tests quarterly - actually recovering files and verifying the data is intact and usable. Most backup failures are only discovered during a real recovery attempt. Our testing ensures you know it works before you need it.
What is cloud backup and do we need it if we already have a NAS?
Cloud backup stores a copy of your data offsite in a secure data centre. A NAS alone is not sufficient because it sits in your office - subject to the same physical risks. Ransomware, fire or flood can affect both your primary systems and your NAS simultaneously.
How long does data recovery take after a major failure?
File-level recovery can take minutes. Full server recovery from an image backup typically takes 2 to 4 hours. Full environment recovery after a catastrophic failure can take 8 to 24 hours.
